Pioneering Internet Charity Gives Blind Deaf & Disabled People Computer Lessons at HomePeople with disabilities, including those with hearing loss, encounter many barriers in their day-to-day life. Whether it’s physical access, or lack of a loop system, accessibility is still patchy, despite the Disability Discrimination Act. One thing which can reduce these barriers is the internet.
Understanding the very real benefits the internet has to offer, and knowing the difficulties many blind, deaf & disabled people face in college classrooms, U Can Do I.T has developed in-home computer training at a very affordable price. You will need an internet ready computer, and if you don’t have one but would like to own a computer and learn how to e-mail and surf the web, U Can Do I.T can give you names and telephone numbers of low cost suppliers.
Although limited to residents in Greater London for the moment, U Can Do I.T can teach you how to order your groceries, get books delivered to your door, and do your banking – all at the touch of a few buttons. And over the next 2 years you will be able to order prescriptions, make hospital appointments, and vote from the comfort of your own home. As one student remarked “I had no idea how much was out there. The computer sat in the corner, and it was really only my children using it, but eventually I got the courage to do the course, which seemed a bit overwhelming, but I have gained great confidence and its very exciting”
U Can Do I.T trainers are carefully selected for their friendliness and competence, and are all closely vetted. They teach on a 1 to 1 basis, providing 10 lessons from as little as £1 for a 1 to 2 hour session, with age no barrier.
The trainers have all disability awareness training, and we have specialists in screen reader programmes for blind people, BSL, and Voice Recognition. And to quote one heard of hearing trainer “It can be isolating when you have hearing problems, and your confidence suffers, but the internet is a great leveller. Because it uses the written word we’re no longer at a disadvantage if we can’t hear well”.
