Become a student

You would be greatly welcome as a U Can Do I.T. student. All details about how this can be done are given in this Zone. You need to complete a detailed application form because you will be visited in your own home by an individual tutor and we must be certain that all health and safety factors have been taken into account. So we ask you to supply personal references and a doctors reference in order to be accepted as a student.

So don't hesitate. Learning how to use your computer is not difficult and will make an enormous difference to the opportunities you will have for communication, education and employment.

WHO CAN APPLY
U Can Do I.T. students are people with physical disabilities, sensory impairment or communication difficulties.  Very often students will have restricted mobility. Students are trained by one of our freelance tutors in their own homes on their own computer.

COMPUTERS
If you do not have your own computer, we frequently receive funding to provide refurbished second hand computers free of charge. However, you may have to fit certain criteria, for example which borough you live in, your age, your desire to progress into employment or further education etc.  Please contact the office for more information.

AREAS COVERED
Our course is available to residents in the Greater London area (within the M25).  However, we are expanding and have tutors available in Milton Keynes, Neath (South Wales), Merseyside (incorporating Blackpool), Edinburgh, Glasgow, Devon, Hampshire, Kent and Sussex. Before you apply, please contact the office to confirm that our tutors can cover your area.

COST OF SERVICE
For those with incomes of less than £100 per week the cost is just £5 a lesson, increasing according to income.  For incomes of £100 or more, please refer to the application form.

HOW TO APPLY
The U Can Do I.T. student application procedure is as follows:

STEP 1 - You fill in our student application form.

This consists of several pages of questions which helps us gain enough information about you to assess your suitability for the course and match the you with the right tutor.

With your permission, we take up your doctor's reference and three personal references.  Included within the application form is a doctor authorisation letter.   We ask you to sign this and return it with the application form.  This gives us permission to contact your doctor.  There is no need for you to contact your doctor.

We would like to re-assure students that a similarly thorough check takes place on all our tutors before they are allowed into your home. Any information given is strictly confidential to be seen only by relevant employees of U Can Do I.T.

The application form also includes a Learning Agreement which we need you to sign and return. The Learning Agreement sets out in detail the relationship between U Can Do I.T. and the student under which the tuition is provided. We will give you an additional copy for your retention and records.

We are able to complete applications over the telephone.
However, we will need to send it to the student to confirm the details taken and also to obtain the necessary signatures.  If you would like to complete an application over the telephone please call us on 020 7730 7766.

Application forms are also available in Braille and in CD format.

If you have any queries on the application process, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Download the Application form and the Application Check list please read both carefully.

STEP 2 - A U Can Do I.T. Tutor assesses you.

Your allocated tutor visits you in your own home and carries out an Assessment.  This is to confirm that your computer is both adequate and in working order, that you have the right programs and modem and that your personal enthusiasm for the U Can Do I.T. course makes it likely that you will enjoy the U Can Do I.T. service. Assuming the Assessment  is successful, the tutor will then collect your course fee and deposit cheque.

STEP 3 - The lessons commence.

Our basic course consists of 10 two hour lessons.  This is very often increased where students need special help owing to disability.  The course also includes four hours of remote lessons.  We also re-visit you 3 months and 9 months after the course has ended to see how you are getting on.

A basic element of the course is the home study work you are asked to complete in between lessons.  It is absolutely essential that students learn to work on their own.  Once the course has ended you will have to develop your own expertise and capabilities.

We recognise that the application process is of a lengthy nature. However, the aim is not to deter any one from taking part, but to ensure that our resources are used to benefit those that really do want to learn to use the Internet. We endeavour to get applicants through the application process in the shortest time possible. You can help by replying promptly and giving your referees notice that we will be in touch with them about you.
