September 2002 Newsletter

On 2nd September Anthony Wigram and Cliff Docherty attended a meeting at the Department of Health with Elizabeth Lynam and Mike Davies to discuss ways in which the charity might be able to gain access to disabled people who could benefit from the U Can Do I.T course.  The discussions were wide-ranging and it was agreed that Elizabeth Lynam would set up a meeting with the Department for Work and Pensions to explore this matter in more depth.

On the 3rd September Cliff Docherty visited the Harrow branch of Headway, the brain injury association, to make a presentation of the charity’s work to their members.  There was a very positive response and the next day a number of enquiries were received by the office about joining the course.

Emma Aldridge, Age Concern England’s IT Development Manager visited I Can Do I.T. on 9th September to find out more about how the charity operates using freelance tutors and to explore ways in which the two organisations might collaborate.  Age Concern have recently had an excellent guide to the internet published, and has agreed to make these available to our tutors.

The London Central Learning & Skills Council hosted a conference on 16th September on the theme of ‘Success for All’.  Anthony Wigram attended on behalf of U Can Do I.T.  Conferences such as this are excellent networking opportunities as well as a chance to learn more about how other LSC partners operate.  We will be following up these contacts in the coming months to see how we may be able to work together.

Lastly, much of September was spent preparing for October’s AGM and reception.  During the reception there will be a presentation of a short film which includes footage of students and tutors at work, as well as the head office staff working behind the scenes.  A lot of the filming was carried out in September and we are particularly grateful to Richard Kershaw for his professional advice and creative input during the filming process, to South London Dial a Ride for allowing us to film them at work, and to all the students, staff and tutors who participated in this project.

Students who graduated from the course this month include Mary M, Trader F, Eric B and Robert W.  Our sincerest congratulations to them.
