June 2002 Newsletter

UK Online logo

We began June with the news that we had has been recognised as a UK Online centre.  UK Online is the government’s strategy to educate people about information and communication technology and how you can use it in your day to day life.  We were therefore delighted to be recognised in this way because it means we have met the very high standards set down by the government for ICT skills tuition.

In a similar vein we have been recognised by Learndirect as a learning provider.  Learndirect is a government-backed scheme to encourage post-16 learning, and therefore is something we are very excited about.  On 10th June Anthony Wigram, Cliff Docherty and tutor Daniel Gilson visited UFI, the company which was set up to administer Learndirect.  Daniel already works for Learndirect, so this is a great bonus for us.  We were met by Karine Barsam who was very enthusiastic about our work, and felt that there was room for collaboration and possible material help in the form of funding for specific projects.  As a result we’ve been put in touch with Learndirect’s London hub manager group who are particularly concerned with engaging people with disabilities in lifelong learning. We will be reporting on this as discussions progress.

On 26th June we attended the London Central Learning and Skills Council’s first anniversary celebration.  This was an excellent opportunity to meet other learning providers, and speak to our existing partners, such as Action for Blind People.  We currently have a bid for funding with the Central London LSC.

Apart from the LSC bid, fundraising continued with approaches made to a number of charitable trusts and foundations.
