August 2002 Newsletter

In August Maria Tremarco joined us as a full-time assistant to Administrator Avril Hanning.  As the charity has grown the amount of behind the scenes work to support the extra students and additional tutors has increased accordingly, so it was vital we maintain momentum by recruiting extra staff to meet the increasing demand for our services.  We are delighted to welcome Maria into our hardworking head office team where we’re sure she will make a vital contribution to our work.

August saw the publication of two articles about U Can Do I T.  The first was in Hearing Concern magazine which is aimed at people with late onset or partial hearing loss.  This produced a very positive response.  However, it was the publication of an article in Transport for All magazine which surpassed all expectations.  Transport for All is the magazine of the Dial a Ride and Taxi Card Users Associations.  A professionally printed glossy magazine, it has a circulation of some 120,000 in London.  A small article about U Can Do I T was published, and 20,000 recipients in North London also received a flyer which was inserted into the magazine.  The result was a massive 107 enquiries, and they are still coming in.  This is a tremendous response, and we will be looking to emulate it in subsequent issues, which will see flyers going out to the remaining 100,000 subscribers.

On the fundraising side we began making bids for statutory funding from each of the London boroughs.

Congratulations are in order to Mary M, who completed her course this month.
