Shopping on the Internet:- how safe is it?

Shop Till You Drop!

A lot of people are unsure about shopping on the Internet. The fact is shopping on the Net is still more secure than handing your credit card over in a restaurant. All you need to remember are ten golden rules.

Always use a secure server
There should be a closed padlock at the bottom of the screen. If there isn't, don't use the site. Also, never send personal card details via e-mall.

Make sure the company has a physical address
If you can't trace the company, the law will never catch up with them. Only buy abroad if you're willing to take a risk with your money.

Shop at reputable sites
Use UK-based companies you are familiar with or that have been recommended by happy customer.

Beware of hidden costs
If you are buying from abroad not only will you be subject to further shipping costs you may also have to pay additional expenses such as customs duties, excise duties and VAT.

Read the small print
Make sure you are clear about the company's returns and refunds policies, as well as how long their delivery will be. If you're buying from abroad check that the guarantee is valid in the UK.

Get in touch
If there is anything you're unsure about, a legitimate company will be happy to help. A phone number on the web site is always a good sign.

Use a credit card
Contrary to popular belief, a credit card is the safest way to pay. Purchases over £100 are protected, and you're also only liable to pay £50 for any fraudulent transactions (although many companies even write this fee off).

Keep records
Print out copies of any transactions, correspondence and confirmation numbers and record dates - it may be the only proof of your purchase you'll have.

Examine your goods
When your goods arrive and you have to sign for them add "Goods not examined", as once you have officially accepted the goods you might lose your right to a refund. Then check all the items you've bought as soon as possible.

Use your common sense
Don't trust a website just because it looks flash or has a catchy address - and remember, if an offer looks too good to be true it probably is.
