Below are some suggestions for organisations, charities or government bodies who may be able to assist you in acquiring a computer suitable for connection to the Internet. There can, of course, be no guarantee that funds or equipment will be available from these sources. We suggest that you apply to all those who seem most relevant to your particular circumstances.

AbilityNet:
Abilitynet is not a grant making body, but they do provide a factsheet on fundraising. Their primary activity is providing an assessment service and advice on adaptive equipment. Please call the AbilityNet Helpline - on 0800 269545 - which is staffed weekdays from 9 - 5pm.

RNIB:
Grants may be made to blind or partially sighted people facing financial hardship to buy equipment. Applications must be made by a third party, such as a Social Worker.

SEQUAL - Special Equipment & Aids for Living:
An organisation that helps raise funds to purchase suitable computers for those with speech or movement difficulties.

Social Services:
Local Authorities Social Services only occasionally give grants, but may be able to help by supporting your application. For example pilot projects are in the planning stage in some London boroughs. Contact the Disability Services team in your borough.
Employment:
For people hoping to get employment of some kind (for example working from home), you may with to make contact with the Disability Employment Advisor (DEA) and the Disability Services Team in your borough. You can contact them through Social Services or your local Job Centre.
This section lists organisations that can loan equipment or offer reduced price on second-hand and reconditioned equipment.
Recycle-IT!
Supply inexpensive second-hand equipment, usually from major corporate organisations. Donors include Coopers & Lybrand, IBM, British Steel, DfEE etc. An average configuration suitable for the Internet is currently around £200.
WAACIS have now negotiated preferred supplier status with ReCycle-IT. We have our own custom-designed form for clients wishing to order equipment from them. Recycle-IT can provide a range of Internet-ready machines for £250 - £300 - mainly ex large corporations or government departments.
