Help & Advice:
Who Owns That Domain Name?
Literally thousands of new domain names are registered every day. Sometimes the owner or person who registered that particular name will be obvious. For example, the domain name - www.tesco.com - was more than likely registered by the Tesco supermarket chain. But most of the time the actual ownership of a domain name will be unclear. But there is a way to find out ... You just need to visit one of two web sites.
Perhaps you really want or need that particular domain name, so if you could find out who owns it, contact them and maybe they will sell it to you!
Domain names ending with .com, .net or .org:
Visit the CORE WHOIS site at http://corenic.org/whois.htm The whois service provides information on names registered through CORE. In case the name has not been registered by CORE, it queries the registry whois and provides that response.
In the search box enter the domain name (including the extension e.g. ".com") then press "Submit".
The information obtained is alarmingly extensive! Some results show the name, address, telephone number, fax and e-mail address of the owner of that particular domain name.
Domain names ending with .uk:
Visit the Nominet site at http://www.nic.uk/index.html Nominet UK is the Registry for all .uk Domain Names - co.uk, org.uk, net.uk, ltd.uk and plc.uk
In the "Domain Name Search" box on the left hand side, enter the domain name (including the extension e.g. ".co.uk") then press "Submit".
The information obtained is not as extensive as for a .com search. But you will discover who the name was registered for, who registered the domain and the date it was registered.
